Channel Islands, day two, Oil Rigs and Catalina Island November 6, 2018

The second day of our dive trip on the Vision took us first to oil rigs off Long Beach and afternoon diving at Catalina.  We had good surface wave conditions, light currents, and spectacular visibility of around 100 ft.  I made two dives on the oil rigs, pictures below, many more at:

Platform Ellie, two standing structures linked by a bridge.  We made a dive under each of these.

We had great visibility and calm seas, as you can see looking up through the water up at the oil rig above in this shot.

When it is clear you can see the incredible scale of the oil rigs.

The oil rigs have amazingly dense encrusting invertebrate life once you get below the depth that is periodically cleaned off, about 50 ft, here is a crossbeam with a Blacksmith swimming beside it.

I love this combination of rich invertebrate life, a Cabezon, and the mechanical structure of the oil rig in the background.
