Seal, Shipwreck, and Sea Lions at Cypress Point September 30,2015

Greg Hoberg and I had a second day of diving with calm conditions last Wednesday.  We made two dives at Cypress Point, one at the inner wash rocks and a second on the SS Flavel which hit the rocks and sank in 1923.  This is the second time we dived the Flavel.  We were entertained by a pair of sea lions and a Harbor seal.  Once again we had very mild water temperature - 57 degrees, at least 5 degrees warmer than normal.  Visibility was around 25 ft.  We've enjoyed pretty good visibility this year, almost none of the "green pea soup" we get most summers.  Fall may soon bring us even better visibility.

The three rocks to the right in this photo are the inner wash rocks at Cypress Point.  The rock to the left, in the background, is the outer rock, never awash, off Cypress Point at the north entrance of Carmel Bay.
Greg found a lingcod when we got to the anchor.
Can you find the snubnose sculpin in this photo?  1/3 from left margin, 1/4 up from bottom margin.
 Kelp greenling, natural light.
Lingcod face shot.  I got his good side!

Our second dive was on the 1923 wreck of the SS Flavel in 25 to 30 ft of water.  We did an amazing job of guesstimating the wreck's position from finding it earlier this year, and practically anchored on top of it.  We were entertained by a pair of sea lions and a harbor seal on this dive.

Greg with another brass mechanism from the wreck, set on top.

 A dive bombing sea lion.
There is giant kelp growing from the wreck and it was really cool to have sea lions diving down to see us as we explored.

The harbor seal was shy, here he is with a sea lion....and some photo bombing blue rockfish.
